Winter hit us hard this year on Florida’s Central East Coast, with water temps dipping into the low 60s from January through February. But even with the cold snap, the fishing never stopped—if anything, it pushed us into some of the best mixed bag action we’ve seen in a long time. As temperatures rise, the entire fishery is waking up, and the spring bite is shaping up to be something special.

🐑 Nearshore Sheepshead — The Winter MVP
If there was one species that stole the show this winter, it was sheepshead. The nearshore reefs and rock piles from Melbourne Beach down to Vero Beach were absolutely loaded.
• Consistent action on every trip
• Average fish: 3–4 lbs
• Big ones: up to 7 lbs
These weren’t your average “bait stealers”—these were thick, heavy, shoulder padded sheepshead that made every drop worth it. This has easily been one of the strongest sheepshead seasons we’ve had in years.

🥁 Black Drum — Giants in the Lagoon
The Banana River and Indian River Lagoon have been holding massive schools of black drum, and the size class this year has been unreal.
• Range: 20–60 lbs
• Baits: handpicked live shrimp on a jighead, or chunk crab
These fish have been stacked up and feeding aggressively, giving anglers a true tug of war experience. When a 40 plus pound drum decides to run, you know it.

🎣 Speckled Trout — Spring Bite Igniting
As the water warms, the speckled sea trout are sliding back onto the flats and getting active.
• Average: 20–24 inches
• Trophies: 28–30 inches
Live greenies and croakers have been the ticket, especially on those calm, warm mornings when the lagoon comes alive. This spring is shaping up to be a strong one for quality trout.

🐟 Snook Season — Game On
Snook season opened February 1st, and now that the water temps are climbing, the bite is finally turning on. After laying low through the cold months, the bigger fish are pushing out of the creeks and inlets and sliding onto the flats, bars, and mangrove edges.
This is when snook fishing gets fun—aggressive strikes, shallow water ambushes, and the kind of explosive runs that make spring my favorite time of year to fish.
Everything is lining up for a phenomenal inshore season across the Central East Coast. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to get out, this is it.
