We are starting 2020 with a bang! The snook and red fishing has been decent at Sebastian Inlet considering we are, now, mid-January. We are having a pretty warm winter thus far. Temps are up, and it makes for better snook fishing! Now, I know it’s not snook season until February, but there are plenty of other types of fish we are catching for the grill like black drum, pompano, kings, trout, and triple tail.
Out of all the fish just mentioned, the pompano fishing has been good! We are getting consistent numbers around Sebastian Inlet and the flats in Vero Beach. When fishing for pompano we are using light tackle gear throwing jigs. Pompano are super fun to catch! For their size, they put up a great fight, and are awesome on the grill! The best cooking method for pompano is on the grill with the skin down, no added oil, and with whatever spices you love!
The black drum are in their usual winter spots. I like to fish for black drum in two different areas. When fishing for the real big drum we move around the bridges in Melbourne, Florida. For the small, keeper size we move around the channel markers in Vero Beach. Drum can also be a good fish to eat, but I recommend eating the smaller ones, the ones around the size of a football are the best!
This concludes my winter fishing report. I would like to thank everyone that Made 2019 a great year!
Thank you! Capt Don
